"The first time, you were." He's a bit smug, but at least he comes by it honestly, as they walk back to the staircase. After a conversation as excruciating as they just had, he can't help but want to assure her that being together really has been good. Great, even.

The steps come slowly for him - as quickly as he can manage, but slow nonetheless. Tucking the cane under one arm, he leans against the rail, keeping hold of her hand, and the world sways in his sights with his effort. "We've made use of just about every public room in Scanlan's chateau, and more than a few at Whitestone."
