AWAKENING IN PAJAK WOOD

The chirping of partridges in the treetops rouses you. Light barely filters through the canopy, just enough to suggest warmth of the sun. By the time it reaches the forest floor, the daylight has taken on a sickly green tinge. You lie amongst the mosses and ferns, the soil cold and just a little damp on your bare skin. Wherever you were before this moment, whatever you were doing or wearing, when you awaken in this forest, you find yourself naked and helpless as the day you were born.

Fortunately, you seem to be alone. The birdsong continues as you sit up and get your bearings — aside from a brief wave of disoriented nausea, you seem to be no worse for wear than you last remember. Amongst gnarled oaks and moss, you see nothing around. No sign of civilization or sentient life. Movement flickers at the corner of your eye, but it's just a curious animal — brave squirrels or lizards who have come to see what stirs in their home.

Then, like the rippling of the horizon at noontime, the ash-gray soil around you undulates. Sea, not earth. Something else has come to greet you — their grey bodies blended in so easily with the floor, but as you stagger to your feet, you see them. Thousands of spiders roll like waves underfoot. They crawl towards you from the darker edge of the forest.

attack
Individuals who attack the spiders will find the small spiders are easy to kill, but the pheromones released by their corpses draw larger spiders in their place. Huge, blood-red spiders the size of hunting dogs drop from the treetops. In addition to their venomous bite, which contains a fast-acting paralytic, these creatures are clever: they will attempt to use their webbing to handicap any trespassers, binding limbs together or to trees. If you're unfortunate to become fully cocooned, you don't have long before this forest will be the last thing you see.

hunt
Any aspiring monster-hunters enterprising enough to try to follow the spiders to their nest will move eastward. This way, the forest grows darker and darker — though the sun never grows warm red-gold with sunset.

In the void, the birdsong is replaced by the click of mandibles and the skitter of many legs, but soon it is impossible to see. Even with the brightest magical light does not reach further than a few inches. The air grows heavy and thick, as if it were not air at all but some more solid mass. Almost like liquid-smoke, it presses down upon you. Slowing your movements. Soon, you cannot move at all.

Turn back while you still can — collapsing out here is dangerous. The void can play tricks on your senses. You may find yourself reliving unhappy memories or hallucinating your worst nightmares.

But flee the spiders westward and you will discover that the wood is well-populated with the survival resources that someone might seek — berries bushes and trees bearing stone fruits; sticks and dry leaves to aid in the building of a fire; rocks big enough to fashion into crude weapons; small animals that can be hunted or caught; hike long enough, and you might just find the freshwater stream that runs north-to-south, populated by both poisonous toads and delicious crawdads.

What's more, you may run into others with stories just like yours. Some may have already formed clumsy nudist hiking parties, others may still be naked and confused and processing how they have no memory of how they got here. They all stagger vaguely, as you do, with only the sun for a waymarker — and even that won't last long.

Now is a good time to overcome any hang-ups you have about modesty, as it's going to be a long hike. If you sneak a good look at your new companions, you may four varietals of marks on their bodies. Maybe someone will even point out that you have one, too.

EVERY DAY LIKE THE ONE BEFORE

Hike far enough — or long enough that the sun does go down — and signs of life come into view. The glow of fires and lights, the smooth curve of a stone wall. A town sits at the edge of this wood, a reward to the survivors.

The fifty-foot wall of beige stone protecting the town's perimeter has only a single entrance — an iron gate positioned on the southern edge. When you arrive, the gate is already open, welcoming people into town from the winding dirt road. Attentive eyes may note that the road itself bears the mark of many wagon wheels and horse hoofs, but not cars.

guards
The guards grant entry to anyone who attempts a conversation with them. However, if your character is more likely to attempt to sneak in, overcome the guards, or attack them, please reach out HERE.

Inside the wall lies a quaint, historic town with a population around five thousand. The streets are cobbled, and their signs are lit by gas lamp. Wooden shutters protect otherwise open-air windows on the buildings, which are all under three stories with gabled roofs. A number of businesses hug the main street — a clockmaker, a cobbler, a bank — while residential homes sprawl outwards towards the wall. At the far end of the main street, visible about a mile to the north now that the trees and the enormous wall is out of the way, sits a castle with three towers.

No matter what time you pass through the gate, the streets are full of people. The climate of the bustle befits a night market or a busy friday downtown — plenty of people to ogle at your exposed body. But despite any efforts on your part to hide or make excuses, the locals don't seem offended by your nakedness. Even families with children don't gawk or look twice. In fact, the further into town you go, the more you may notice that they all wear revealing clothing that, to your sensibilities, may seem sexually suggestive. Some individuals openly expose their breasts and nipples, while some others may incidentally reveal when they turn around to tend to their errands that their dress is backless — entirely! If anything, they seem to be under the impression that you're naked to participate in the evening's events with the rest of them.

Those still determined to find proper clothing will find that modern clothing stores aren't a thing here. The closest this town has is a tailor's shop, which is closed for religious observance, and a stand in the central marketplace selling scarves and blankets.

Fortunately, the people of the town are very generous! The locals will gladly share what they have with those who ask politely — but those items are as revealing as what they're wearing. You might get a mesh bodysuit or drape outfit. Remember not to be ungracious! it's only appropriate for the occasion.

steal clothing
Anyone unwilling to ask nicely for help could break into someone's house or yard to steal some of their clean laundry. Notably, inside their homes, the people of the town also appear to own some more modest apparel. Be sure to alert us HERE if your character pursues this option.

And what is the occasion? The locals are excited and flattered by any interest in their ordinary weekly prayer: the folks dancing and selling their wares are all offering their energies to give thanks and ask for their god's patronage! The abstractions are all familiar — fertility, harvest, peace. Smalltalk makes them eager to chat and draw you into those festivities — including some ceremonial wax-dripping on the exposed parts of your body!

Anyone who chats at length with the townspeople will gather that the locals feel it's better for the newcomers to dive into the deep-end because, since you'll be settling in here, they expect you'll want to participate down the line. They seem to be under the impression that the new arrivals are a boon from their god.

In addition, many of the locals' choice of clothes reveal the same four types of marks on their bodies as the folx who were wandering out in the wood!

ROOM AND BOARD

Once you're tired out, the locals will help you find a place to stay. The boarding house is several stories tall and spacious, accessible through an embellished iron garden gate and obscured by hanging plants, trees, and vines. Beyond the overgrown yard is a bright red door, which opens into a spacious cottage.

The house has clearly been empty for some time — dust has gathered on various furnishings — bedding, sofas, curtains, wooden tables. According to the locals, it has remained empty since its last occupant passed away, and that's all they'll say about that!

Each floor of the house has a shared sitting room, but only the first floor has a kitchen — large enough to support feeding the entire household. Here, a few of the townspeople will help out — they stock the kitchen and help make dinner for the new arrivals.

finding roommates
Don't spend too much time in the dining room going for seconds, though. You'll want to claim a bedroom quickly because each one only has two full-size beds, and there aren't enough spaces for everyone. The last people upstairs will need to double up to squeeze in. Roommates will not be mod-assigned; players should coordinate directly with one another to determine their living arrangements.

Get a good night's rest. By the light of day, locals will help get the new arrivals set up on the coal stove with breakfast. You may notice they're dressed in a way you would almost call normal — at least, in a manner befitting 19th century Eastern Europe. As you find your way around town to get your bearings, folks are eager to help you find a place to apply your skills so you can contribute to your new home.

dimitri alexandre blaiddyd ♔ fe:3h (azure moon, mid-timeskip) ♔ skala

[personal profile] blaiddydblood 2023-05-19 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
♔ awakening. (cw: violent thoughts)
Funny enough, waking up where he does - and like he does - isn't anything that is out of the norm for Dimitri. Not being able to find his armor is an inconvenience but he's sure he'll be able to snap the necks of the rat bastards that stole it from him.

As Dimitri begins to awaken further, he remembers falling asleep to the cold snap of Faerghus spring though and not... this lush greenery. Had he traveled further south than he realized, perhaps? As the man considers and begins to make moves to track the nearby wildlife, that's when the spiders began to skitter upon him.

They're easily disposed of, crushed under his bare heel or slammed beneath a large palm. Once a large one comes forth after being drawn by the pheromones emitted, the man gives a wicked grin. "Finally," he growls, easily snapping a large log laying on the ground and brandishing it's jagged edges at the monster. "A challenge."

If he saves someone from being attacked by one of the larger spiders, it was just mere coincidence. Any thanks will be met with a grunt in non-response before he begins to stalk off towards the next hunt.

It's also possible that in his reckless abandon while attempting to kill the creatures, he harms someone instead. He won't apologize or stop to assist but can likely be guilted into it despite himself with enough persistence.

♔ crime time. (cw: blood)
A loud of shattering of glass breaks nearby conversation. A man saying 'Sir, excuse me, you can't just take that-' might be heard before it's met with an animalistic growl.

Paying no mind to the one trying to stop him, Dimitri takes a cloak from a shop's display window and drapes it over himself. It comes in a strange pattern of holes that are likely meant to entice but hunched over, teeth bared, and stance defensive- He doesn't really look like anyone would be enticed by.

Well, maybe someone.

His hand that he used to punch through the glass display window is bleeding and sore. He gives small hisses of pain as he picks shards of glass from his knuckles and doesn't seem to pay much mind to the crimson he's staining his new cloak with as he works. Someone might... want to help him, honestly, as he's making quite the scene.

♔ room and board - dining hall only.
Caked in blood, dirt, and absolutely wreaking, Dimitri is probably turning quite a few heads in the dining hall. His hair hangs in limp strands and hides part of his face. While he doesn't care about beds, he does care about food and it's the only thing that drew him here in the first place.

He eats like a man who hasn't in several days. And that's true because, well, he hasn't had a consistent source of meals other than what he could hunt for himself in years now. To have something provided, whatever it is, he takes it thanklessly and as much as he's able to.

It's impressive(ly disgusting) how much he's able to put away. Utensils? Forget about them. Food can be so much easier shoved into his mouth by hand than fragile forks or other silverware. He filches food, too, from anyone that 'loses their appetite' near him or is about to throw away anything that he considers still consumable.

(Basically, a feral man is loose in the dining hall. Help.)

[ dimitri is really the only person who seems able to keep up with mavis, who has refilled her plate twice now without any sign of stopping. when someone near the two of them gets up, mavis reaches for their half-emptied plate at the same time dimitri does.

when she realizes that he's also trying to take it, she meets his gaze.

then she lets the plate go and instead swipes the roll off the top of it, taking a quick bite from it so she can assure that he won't try to take it back from her.

[ His single blue eye meets hers in a steely, unflinching gaze.

Once the plate is dropped from her grasp, he thinks maybe he's won but- Ah. He sees how this is going to be.

Does she think he has shame? After he does try to swipe that roll back still, she probably won't. He's eaten worse than food that someone else has already taken bites out of; all things considered, she looks cleaner than most of the corpses causes by his hand that he looted food off of.

Part of him hopes she bites him, too, since then he'll have an excuse to retaliate.

[ even in the crowded dining room, even drunk on wine to tolerate the mental clutter, she feels his intent before his hand moves. it's easy, therefore, to smack his hand away as soon as it starts towards the roll.

she grabs the knife and holds it towards him, jaw set, as she takes another bite from the roll. she isn't above stabbing a man over some bread.

[personal profile] moondregs 2023-05-20 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn’t so much that Junpei wasn’t going to finish the hunk of meat that was suddenly being purloined away from his plate - he had just had frequent moments of zoning out ever since arriving in this place, and he was in the midst of such a session.

The sudden theft snaps him out of it though, and without thinking he lets out an annoyed, “Hey!”

Back home it was a regular occurrence for guys much larger than him to harass and hurt him, and while most of the time his tactic was to just suffer through it until they got bored, it was his tendency to occasionally sass back that often made things worse for him.

Today he’s feeling especially prickly from all the fear and humiliation he’s felt packed into such a short time, so his judgment is once again overridden by his emotions.

“There’s plenty of food. Give that back,” he delivers in an icy tone one might not expect from someone who outwardly looks so meek.
blaiddydblood: <user name="perfectteatime"> (pic#15507402)

[personal profile] blaiddydblood 2023-05-26 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
"No," comes the deep, immediate growl of an answer.

"If there's plenty of food, then you be the one to get more." Dimitri knows that's cruel but doesn't care. Junpei isn't the only one with his emotions running high and nerves feeling raw. "Unless you think you can take it from me?"

He'd like to see this puny excuse of a man try.
moondregs: (i'm afraid to leave the house)

[personal profile] moondregs 2023-05-26 02:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Words were essentially all Junpei had in any confrontation he’d had with his bullies … but that had been before meeting Mahito.

He hasn’t had any chance yet to use his shikigami against another human, simply practicing it under Mahito’s direction in the sewers when they get together. In truth, as much bitterness towards humanity as he contained, it was still hard to make that final step into hurting others. No matter how cruel they had been. Had he not been pulled here that time would come, but this Junpei has not yet made the choice to kill.

As such, while the otherworldly form of the curse jellyfish is manifesting behind him purely from his frustration, it vanishes in an instant as he pushes the strong emotions back down.

Instead, he turns to his words again.

“Why, so you can steal that too?”he responds firmly, “I’m not leaving until you give it back to me.”

"Or else we'll both be here for a while."

awakening

[personal profile] escherichia_coli 2023-06-11 09:54 am (UTC)(link)
Modesty isn't something the Doctor seems to miss, because that implies he has any shame. Why have shame when you have power? No, the dominant emotion is anger. Whatever entity brought him here... who do they think they are? Dottore has work to do. Being kidnapped is not only unacceptable, it's almost inconceivable.

The Doctor is not the type to rage at the heavens, but stalking purposefully through the woods helps very slightly. To walk is to have a modicum of control, and he'll grab that control with both hands.

It's the sound of battle that snaps Dottore out of his head, and he follows it hungrily. A large stick will do nicely in the absence of a real weapon.

Coming upon the spiders, the Doctor pays Dimitri almost no mind, instead driving the jagged end of the stick through the head of the nearest spider. Ichor sprays onto his face and he just grins. His teeth are jagged, his eyes are wild, and his anger and frustration finally have an outlet.

Perfect, Dimitri thinks, as the man ignores him and instead hones in on their shared enemy instead. The fresh scent of blood on the air and spider's sickening scream only see his own lips curl up into an over-confident smirk. While Dottore focuses on assaulting that arachnid, Dimitri attacks another that crawls down on spindly legs.

It hisses at him but it's cut short by the drive of his own makeshift weapon against him. A smidge of gore gets on his cheek but he doesn't slow any. A flash of his crest and the beast is practically flattened for his strength but he persists. More coats him with each push and slam of that log against the spider's carcass; eventually, his chest is heaving from the effort as he slows and stops to look at this newcomer.

"This will only bring more, I hope you know." And he hopes that the other man is ready as Dimitri is.

"Good." Dottore's deep voice is a growl, and he leans briefly on his makeshift spear. "This forest... Liyue?" The fog makes him think of Wuwang Hill, but it's been a long time since he's seen it. It's definitely not the humid rainforest of Sumeru.

There's no time for an answer in the positive or negative, because a skittering of legs over the leaves heralds a new wave of spiders to slaughter. Polearms aren't the Doctor's specialty but stabbing giant bugs does not require much finesse.

Liyue? The name isn't familiar to him. "Not Faerghus, at least," he offers. That's all he can say so far. The foliage isn't right, for one thing. For another, he knows those wilds like the back of his hand at this point. He was used to waking up disoriented and alone but not in an entirely foreign place.

It doesn't require any finesse, no, which is probably why he's so good at it. "You aren't from here," he notes. Are any of them? It's something that he might wonder about more later when there are fewer enemies that require his attention.
escherichia_coli: (Default)

[personal profile] escherichia_coli 2023-06-27 05:19 am (UTC)(link)
Dottore can't help but chuckle, even as his attention is redirected. "Perceptive," he says, with just a hint of sarcasm.

The spiders remain small and easy to kill, and in a brief break he points with his spear. "They're coming from that w-- augh!" He's cut off by a heavy weight dropping down onto him, knocking him to the ground - a much larger spider, blood red and snapping with its mandibles. Only a quick twist keeps the Doctor from being bitten, but the fall has knocked the makeshift spear from his hand.

Dimitri hears the man cry out in the midst of battle. It isn't his concern or responsibility to save him. Yet, his carcass might draw even larger predators forth so he's more useful alive to the blond than dead. That's all. It's what he'll say to explain his actions, at any rate.

His movement is swift and precise. Without a second though, Dimitri launches his own makeshift weapon in time with a flash of light in the form of his Crest; it activates that inhuman strength of his and sends the spider atop Dottore reeling onto its side in a splash of gore and venom. Spindly spider legs twitch and struggle in vain.

"Pay attention," Dimitri snaps. "Or the next moment might be your last."
